Chevron & Burlap No Sew Ruffle Tree Skirt

I haven't spent much time this year doing projects just for the fun of it. So in spirit of the holiday season, I took a day for myself to make this awesome no sew ruffle tree skirt.

The tutorial came from HGTV, and the fabric inspiration from Done Over Decor. I combined the two, put my own spin on it and am a 100% fan of the result. Below is my method to the madness.

Supplies
  • 3 1/2 yards fabric (1/2 yard red chevron, 1 yard red burlap, 2 yards regular burlap)
  • Fabric scissors or rotary mat + rotary blade + big ruler
  • Red spray paint (optional for step 2)
  • Red felt tree skirt ($5 from Walmart or Target)
  • Hot glue + hot glue gun
  • 7.5 feet of red ribbon

Step 1: Cut fabric into 2"-3" wide strips. HGTV suggested the strips to be 12" in length, but mine were probably 20"-30". Also, using a rotary mat + rotary wheel made this step much easier than if using fabric scissors. I used ruler too to assist in straight lines.

I'm also a bit crazy and was paranoid about my burlap unraveling too much due to crooked lines. So in an attempt to prevent it, I followed the burlap lines exactly by pulling a thread every couple of inches.

Step 2 (optional): Spray paint burlap red. I couldn't find a good quality red fabric to use, so I just decided I would spray paint the burlap. It was easy to do and even easier considering I already had the spray paint at home.

Step 3: Apply the fabric strips to the felt tree skirt with your hot glue gun, pinching ruffles as you go, starting in rows from bottom to top. You'll want some overlap on the layers, but if you want a heavy overlap, make sure you have extra fabric, just in case. Also, as far as creating the ruffle effect, it's a bit of trial and error to get it how you'd like. I suggest practicing your method on some scrap fabric first to get your groove. This is a pretty time-consuming step, but it definitely gets more efficient once you get going.

Step 4: Cut six 15" strips of ribbon and hot glue them to the back side of the tree skirt, allowing the ability to tie three bows for closure. I used the suggested grosgrain ribbon, but I think satin ribbon would be gorgeous too. Technically, the felt base had velcro fasteners, so ribbon wasn't required, but they were off-centered and caused my ruffled rows to not align. Thus I added the ribbon bows, which are pretty cute.

And... TA-DA!

Yeah, it might be an over-done Pinterest project, but I'm definitely a fan. Need more direction on making one yourself? Hop over to the HGTV tutorial for even more descriptive instructions.

  4. I don't know if you have been contacted but a shop on Etsy called; ARUSTICCHRISTMAS is using your image for your beautiful tree skirt and selling it for $150. This Fraudulant shop has done this to several vendors, sellers, bloggers and even Potterybarn. They did it to me DAnnAccessories on Etsty with the image of my burlap stockings from 2011.
I have reported them to Etsy, you can actually do it on the store site, but Etsy still hasn't shut them down
I don't know if you wanted to do this but I felt I should let you know.
    Thanks,
